SUstainability

The Long Time started as a vision of sustainability, community, and creativity. It has always been a testament to upcycling and reuse since most of the materials used to build it were rescued just before heading to the landfill. Our core value of doing more with less runs through everything we do as a guiding principle in not only construction, but also in event management, especially as it relates to waste created during our events – our largest environmental impact. We’re proud to share what we see as a core tenet of who we are and several ways that make a Saturday at The Long Time unlike any other.

Focus Areas:

  • Event waste: Reducing overall waste creation and material sent to the landfill

  • Engagement: Messaging to all stakeholders

  • Construction: Using reclaimed materials

2025 Season in Waste

91% waste diverted away from the Landfill so far in 2025, achieving "Zero-Waste" status

Event waste

  • Reusable Cups - all vendors who are using cups are given reusable cups (supplied by Cup Zero). These cups are used by attendees for all drinks that don’t already come in their own containers (e.g. cocktails, wine, lemonade) then deposited by attendees in bins to be washed and re-used for the next event.

  • Sorting - each piece of waste is hand sorted into five streams (Reusable Cups, Aluminum Cans, All Other Recycling, Compost, and Landfill). We do this to ensure we’re recovering as many Reusable Cups as possible, prevent contamination in our waste streams, and ultimately divert almost all (over 90%!) of our waste away from the Landfill.

  • Waste Stations - attendees deposit their waste in well-marked, standardized stations around the grounds which are always the same and always have each waste stream represented (Reusable Cups, Recycling, Compost, and Landfill). Eliminating standalone waste bins or incomplete waste stations makes the Sorting step much easier.

Engagement

  • Everybody - on this webpage, on Instagram, in our monthly newsletter, and in our biannual zine we want to inspire our community (and anybody else!) to support this vision and culture shift.

  • Vendors - since most of the material that ends up in our waste streams comes from vendors, not attendees, we are vigilant about the types of materials they bring onto the property. One way we think of it is: everything that comes in will eventually be leaving. And we want it to leave in a wash bin to be reused again, or in a compost container, or a recycling bin. We’ve added language to our contracts to reflect this vision and work with each vendor to identify how they can minimize their footprint while they’re here.

  • Attendees - the main attendee engagement we push is bringing their own water bottle. We provide clean, cold drinking water at each game, eliminating the need for plastic water bottles.

Construction

  • Building from Reclaimed Materials - The Long Time is built from scrap metal and wood (but mostly metal) – in the spirit of Sandlot, we are making something out of nothing. When you’re here, most of the material for the structures around you have been repurposed, salvaged, rescued from the landfill (or from the back lot at Lowe’s) and given a new life.
